Still to be prettied up!

Canon: Final Fantasy XIV
Character: Yda Hext
Variation: AU
General canon details:
Yda Hext was born in Ala Gannha, territory ruled over by the nation-state of Ala Mhigo, known for its military might. We don't know a lot of detail about her childhood- though my guess is that it was reasonably happy, if harsh. Matters in Ala Mhigo took a turn for the worse, with the ascension of Theoderic- later called the King of Ruin. Theoderic sought to take back the power the Fist of Rhalgr- an order of monks dedicated to Rhalgr, the patron god of Ala Mhigo- and this gradually became tyranny, Theoderic seeking to cut down any potential opposition. The people rebelled- Yda and her father, Curtis Hext, among them.

Although this was eventually successful, the Garlean Empire- a nation that had grown in power from the far north- swooped to take advantage of the resulting chaos, conquering Ala Mhigo- the nation that had seen itself as Eorzea's shield. Curtis Hext fell in an attempt to resist the Garlean invasion, and Yda fled westward with her younger sister Lyse, to the territory of Gridania- the nation-state living under the blessing of the elementals. The two were rejected by the elementals- forced to wander, still seeking a new place to settle. Eventually they found their way to the Dravanian hinterlands, and the mainland settlement of Sharlayan, where the two and other Ala Mhigan refugees were granted refuge. At this point, Yda met Papalymo Tatalymo, who eventually became her great friend, and introduced her to Louisoix Leveilleur, beginning formal education for her. This was not an easy path for her, as Yda prefers activity to letters, but she did eventually become an Archon and one of Louisoix's Circle of Knowing- returning to Gridania years later to find out what she and Papalymo could of how Gridania intended to defend itself against Garlean invasion. In the course of their investigations, a man called Dunstan was brought in, to be reclaimed from being a wilding (which is what happens when the elementals claim someone, for having gained too much woodsin, or perhaps simply something the elementals see they can do [this second situation's not super clear and I'm pretty sure it's never going to come up again]). At the great ceremony to cleanse people's woodsin, an adventurer's power known as the Echo activated, showing Yda, Papalymo, and the adventurer part of the past. This alerted Papalymo and Yda to the fact that something bigger was going on- presumably the soon-to-be presence of the primal. Papalymo despaired- but Yda refused to, exclaiming that they could still do something!

What they did do next is unclear- presumably more research on what's going on- but Yda and the other Archons sent to Eorzea don't really appear until the adventurer and companion set off to help some of the Ala Mhigan Resistance in their attempt to claim a Garlean airship. Gaius van Baelsar- commander of the XIVth Imperial Legion- made a personal appearance, and the Archons defended against his attacks, before giving the adventurer and companions some cryptic words about the power they possessed and then disappearing again.

AU details:
The world of Hydaelyn has been threatened by world-ending disasters a number of times- referred to as Calamities. In this AU, Hydaelyn- the mothercrystal- sees the Twelve reborn, in order to try to see the world through the Calamity- people who usually find themselves drawn towards one another over time. Usually, they’d also become aware of themselves before the Calamity- being born with the marks of the deity whose essence they possessed- but this largely wasn’t the case this time. There were a few exceptions- including Yda, who had become aware of her nature as the incarnation of Rhalgr after a mission to help some of her countrymen escape occupation under the Garlean Empire went very wrong, and she was effectively reborn. Yda figured that it would be too awkward to try to return to Gridania, and that- if she was going to be this now, she probably owed it to the other Ala Mhigans to try to protect them as best she could. That said, given that as far as she knew gods could be a bane upon the land, Yda felt it best not to get too close to them- in case something bad should be of it.

She clashed with Garlean forces a lot over the next few years, and eventually she ended up fighting Fordola. The two of them seemed about evenly matched, eventually fighting to a standstill. They continued to fight, but this became something the two of them looked forward to- and the seeds of a friendship, and Yda eventually assuming Fordola as a younger sister- it had been a while since she’d seen her sister Lyse, or had any deep bonds, and she missed that. She’s aware the others are around- not all of the fine details of who’s who, not yet- but they haven’t quite reconnected yet, and she’s not sure how. Besides- the Empire’s still being trouble, and the others are busy with the troubles in Eorzea- for now, at least. Soon, they’ll be moving east- to really start fighting the Empire…
